Intradermal Application of Modern (cell-culture and Embryonating Egg) Rabies Vaccines for Human Rabies Post-exposure Treatment
نویسنده
چکیده
In developing countries, where more than 99% of all human rabies deaths occur, nervous tissue antirabies vaccines are still the most widely used because of their relatively low cost and despite their variable potency and the risk of neurological complications. The supplies of modern and safe vaccines for many developing countries are grossly inadequate whereas the demand for affordable and safe human post-exposure treatment (PET) is increasing in the developing world. Although the costs of modern vaccines are decreasing, the current price of a full intramuscular vaccine treatment is far beyond what an average family in Africa or Asia can afford.

Comparison of Immune Responses following Intradermal and Intramuscular Rabies Vaccination Methods
Rabies is a zoonotic viral disease. The causative agent is a negative-sense RNA genome virus of the genus Lyssavirus (Family: Rhabdoviridae). The disease, commonly transmitted by rabid dogs, is the cause of mortality of over 59000 humans worldwide annually. This disease can be prevented before the development of symptoms through proper vaccination even after exposure. Hence, improvement of the ...

According to official WHO data more than 2.5 billion people are at risk in over 100 countries reporting the disease. Rabies mortality ranks ten in all infectious diseases worldwide. There are still about 50,000 to 60,000 human deaths annually although effective vaccines for post-exposure treatment are available. Most affected are the tropical countries in Africa, Asia, South America, and Oceani...
متن کاملEfficacy of Purified Vero Cell Rabies Vaccine (PVRV) under the Zagreb Regimen in Iran
Background: Despite the effective pre- and post-exposure treatments, at least 60,000 deaths from rabies occur worldwide every year. Post-exposure treatment is considered as one of the most significant measures for preventing human deaths in exposed individuals. The 2-1-1 rabies post-exposure treatment schedule known as Zagreb regimen is an abbreviated immunization plan in which a tissue cultu...

BACKGROUND Rabies is a uniformly fatal disease, but preventable by timely and correct use of post exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Unfortunately, many health care facilities in Pakistan do not carry modern life-saving vaccines and rabies immunoglobulin (RIG), assuming them to be prohibitively expensive and unsafe. Consequently, Emergency Department (ED) health care professionals remain untrained in ...
متن کاملThree-year experience with 4-site intradermal booster vaccination with rabies vaccine for postexposure prophylaxis.
For booster vaccination of previously immunized persons with potential exposure to rabies, the World Health Organization recommends 2 doses of cell-culture vaccine administered intramuscularly or intradermally on days 0 and 3. We believe that four 0.1-mL intradermal booster doses given on a single day could be used at no risk to the recipient. We studied use of a single booster vaccination on d...
